More errant cabbies caught
Weekend / December 8, 2007
Nine errant taxi drivers will have their vocational licences revoked, while another 10 will be suspended between two and eight weeks.
They were among the 130 drivers who have been booked since Oct 24 for touting, overcharging and refusing to pick up passengers, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said yesterday.
The LTA has issued 52 Notice of Traffic Offences (NTO) to the errant taxi drivers, with more to follow after ongoing investigations are completed.
Those caught on or after Nov 19 - when heavier penalties came into effect - face immediate suspension or revocation of their vocational licences, the LTA said.
In enforcement operations conducted over a 13-day period from Nov 19 to Dec 1, 14 errant taxi drivers were nabbed at popular night-spots including Boat Quay, Chijmes, Clarke Quay, Mustafa Centre, Orchard Towers and Shenton Way.
Six of these taxi drivers were found to have overcharged their passengers, while eight refused to convey passengers. None was found touting.
Besides the regular hot-spots, LTA enforcement officers are also carrying out surveillance at other popular nightspots along Beach Road, Chinatown, Lau Pa Sat and North Bridge Road to ensure that the errant taxi drivers have not merely moved their activities to other areas.
