Singapore cabbies are "no class" when it comes to service

Singapore cabbies are "no class" when it comes to service

Posted on 02 Mar, 2008 12:47

Our cabbies are not First World or Third World, says Wolverine, who is a seasoned traveller.First World cabbies, like those in the US, are service oriented (except for those who are new migrants from Somalia or Iraq). They would help you carry your bags to the boot and are professional in their driving skills and would not take you on the "scenic" route to make sure you pay more.Third World cabbies, like those in India, are also service oriented, even to the point of subservience. But Singapore cabbies, some of them anyway, says Wolverine, have "no world" and "no class". Like this cabbie who picked up a woman passenger struggling with baby, pram and her groceries at the Paragon taxi stand last week."That guy just sat on his butt in the car while the woman struggled to carry her baby while opening the boot and putting the pram and groceries in it. Those in queue behind her did nothing but watch," he said.

Wolverine says he was stuck behind the queue and couldn't go up to assist her. What was real galling was that the cabbie finally came out of his car, only after the woman was inside his cab.

Why? He wanted to check that his boot was closed properly.Singaporeans still have a long, long, long way to go in terms of social graces, comments Wolverine.

leetokkong, he said he was stuck in the line, didn't you read? And the taxi driver is obviously in the wrong. If you got nothing to say, DONT say.

wah lau! Want to kill all birds with one stone. If you think so low of fellow Singapoeans, Wolverine, why don't you migrate and become a third class citizen in a first world country.

KingPriest said on 02 Mar, 2008
Wolverine, you are right. Although taking a cab in the US or Australia is expensive, their drivers are service-oriented. Here in Singapore, they increase cab fares but service quality remains sub-standard.

Who say, their are still the world record holder for sounding car horn at 0.18 sec after the lights change, can you beat that?

Nobody says service is free. ==UprightCitizen said on 02 Mar, 2008 the cab drivers in the US are service-oriented?? you gotta be kidding me. if you do not pay them at least a certain percentage of tips, you see whether they are service-oriented or not. you will be abused with a wide range of names that would even shame a sailor. ==

I agree that we should not always compare apples to oranges (if we want to, why don't compare the wages US cabbies earn with those our cabbies earn) But honestly our cabbies still have long way to go to improve on service quality. Nothing is perfect, continuous improvement is necessary.

Most of the cabby have no service. Some are so lazy to even downshift to the right gear that you get a unwanted 'massage'. They locked their vehicle and kept the aircon running. I bet this is a short term stop gap job until they find a better way to earn their living. And yes, I am ashamed of most of them. Just a couple of hours ago, I saw this chap struggling to load 3 big luggages into the taxi boot. Their mentality is to get you from pt A to B and that does not included using the right gear some of the time. Yucks.

Why bother to reply if you have no constructive contribution to this debate. ==supersun said on 02 Mar, 2008 Not happy don't take taxi lor. Not happy here don't stay here lor! ==

Frankly, before increasing fare and comparing what those oversea cab are getting, the taxi company should make sure the service standard improve. It's not fair to keep saying the fare for taxi here is low and yet there is no comparison of service standard.

the taxi driver here only care about higher pay, who care about what service, the pay always go higher but the service always go down

deritz said on 03 Mar, 2008
C'mon be honest. Won't you be like them if you are a taxi driver too?

Taxi company should learn from Japan Taxi Driver in order to be world class!

Wao at last some people here noticed. The type of class of singapore taxi drivers. But I've seen some minorities are good. Drivers please be careful when you are taxis are around you, esp. in front of you.

bloombloom said on 03 Mar, 2008
Nothing controversial. Service is not free. I tipped cabbies when they helped me with luggages to and from airports. They were proactive and offered their help. UprightCitizen said on 03 Mar, 2008 Right. Service is NOT free. So why expect it? or demand for it? Geez. Giving yourself a controversial statement.

I think there is no right or wrong to this situation, Taxi drivers are not required to carry the luggage or prams for passengers. It is up to the driver to provide this service. It is good if they help. If the women can carry a baby and pram to go shopping that means she is a very capable women, because I cannot do it, so she don't need any help. And we cannot compare Singapore taxi service to US or other places because they expect to be tipped for their service while Singapore don't. Also a 30 mins ride in Singapore to airport is abt S$20, in Europe it is S$100. How to compare??? I am not a Taxi Driver.

Overseas 1 trip last at least half an hour. In Spore, 1 trip at the most 10 min average. Starting fare at $2.80/-, one of the cheapest job in the world. Will you do it?

If the Government can solve the problem of "Gracefulness"...just like most Japanese culture, Singapore's level of services (i.e. taxi, shopping centers, hawker centers, etc.) will see a lift to first world standard. But then looking at the huge influx of immigrants ( FTs, students, workers ), I don't there won't be any improvements.

When cabbies service passengers with 'world class' standard, please, don't forget to tip them 'world class' standard as well (around USD5), hor! :)

Devil.King said on 03 Mar, 2008
Who say SIN cab driver have no class? All of them have class 3 driver licence, some even have class 2, 4,5. hahaha Joke aside, I do agree that SIN service industry really need to buck up!

carlypok said on 03 Mar, 2008
The 'seasoned traveller' Wolverine should know that we don't pay 'world-class' cab fares unlike in US, don't expect the cabbies to do every damn thing! If the lady needs help, ask lah, cabby sure help one. And if they don't, ah... then you have an excuse to complain, my dear. Wolverine, if you had really meant to help, I can't imagine how you cannot excuse yourself to get out of the queue to help. I would imagine the lady must have taken quite awhile to load her stuff? Next time, try a better excuse than being 'stuck behind the queue'.
